These Might Be the Best Tortilla Chips of All Time
19 Avril 2017
I have three serious food weaknesses: Swedish Fish, boiled peanuts, and tortilla chips. In other words, put me in a room with a bag of any of these and I'm useless.
These days, my most crippling addiction is to the homemade corn chips made by Sabor Mexicano out of Berkeley, California. My snack friends, you have never encountered a better tortilla chip. Yes, we tested a whole slew of tortilla chips for this year's Super Bowl, but Sabor Mexicano chips weren't included, since they can be a little difficult to find. Right now, they are available in stores in California, New York, Oregon and Washington. Alas, they are not available online yet. But you should hit them up on Instagram @sabormexicano and tell them to come to your town. Seriously, do it.
Why am devoted to them? Well, they smell and taste like freshly roasted corn. They've got the slightest hint of lime, which gives them a nice tang, and their surface is slightly bubbled and super crunchy, with minimal greasiness¿something that often plagues homemade tortilla chips. But, most important, they are thick enough to handle swipes through guacamole without breaking and still light and crispy enough to polish off the bag within 10 minutes of opening.
One caveat: these are not the chips for making nachos (that would be like using Vintage Dom Perignon for your office party punch). And sorry salsa, your services are not essential for snacking (although, it should be noted, Sabor Mexicano does make some crazy good jarred salsas as well). These chips are so perfect they need no further embellishments. Well, except for perhaps a margarita in your other hand.
